June 28, 2011 – Harry Aujla
Cashes in Event 32, Brant Taylor chops a Rio Deepstack
for ~$12,000.
Harry was not playing for the
league but just the same a huge congrats on another DHPLers
deep run. Harry busted out to 72o with AQ on an AK2x2 board to finish 237th
of 2828 players for $3054. Poker is rough at times. With the amount of deep
runs we are having someone is bound to break through to a Final Table soon.
Brant also had a good run in
6pm deepstack tourney at the Rio. $185 buyin, 520 runners. He got down to 20k from 40k blinding
out with BB at 4000. Then he found AA and held! At 6am there were 3 left and
Brant had just doubled to 1.3m. Another guy had 1.8M after doubling Brant and
young guy 2.3m. The young guy said give him $500 each and we chop. So Brant got
just under $12k from $185 buyin. Well done!.
June 27, 2011 – Roger Fails to Cash after deep run
Roger played the $1k NLH
event today and was able to run it up from 3000 starting stack to 16k at level
8. That’s when he ran AK into AA for a very painful cooler that knocked him out
of the tournament. It was a good run nonetheless, finishing in the top 20% ~580th
of 2900 players.
June 23, 2011 – Dave Sims Cashes for $2143 in Event 8,
5 others fall short in their attempts.
Well a big congratulations to
Dave Sims who took a very short stack into Day 2 of Event #8 $1000 NLH and
proceeded to cash. He finished 328th of 4178 players to take home
$2,143 and become the 3rd ever cash by players playing for the DHPL.
Five other players have tried and failed to cash so far with Lance Murdoch
coming closest making it well past dinner break before ultimately falling
short. Steve McLarty, Brant Taylor, Jay Petersson and Mike Henderson were the other unfortunates. I
haven’t heard from Mike H how his tourney went yet.
Still to play are Roger on
June 26th, Mike Menkes on Tuesday, June
28, Rod Smith on Sunday, July 3rd and of course Magus who is playing
the Main Event on July 9th.
I myself managed to cash 1 of
6 events I’ve played so far this year coming 149th of 3157 players
in a $1500 NLH event for $3920. I’ve had a few other deep runs including
busting 74th where 72 got the money in a PLH tourney. Other DHPLers who played WSOP events this year included Harry Aujla, Andrew Krywaniuk, Larry
Williams, Scott Brynen, Pat Woelk
and Graham Spence. None of them cashed in the WSOP yet that I know of yet. Good
luck to everyone still to play.

April 12, 2011 – Magus Beales
win Main Event Package
The League Final came and went and we had a few interesting tidbidts to note. Magus Beales outlasted Rod Smith heads up to win the coveted Main Event seat and will be our leagues representative at the biggest show in poker. Rod played some phenomenal poker to get there and lost on the final hand when his Ax (I think A3) lost all in pre-flop to the KJ of Magus. Brant Taylor played David earning a WSOP seat after starting the night with only 1200 chips. Interesting to note the other starting positions of our eventual winners.
1. Magus Beales 12th 11,600
2. Rod Smith 1st 46,400
3. Mike Menkes 14th 10,400
4. Steve McLarty 22nd 8,000
5. Dave Sims 7th 14,400
6. Lance Murdoch 6th 14,800
7. Brant Taylor 44th 1,200
8. Jay Peturssen 21st 8,000
9. Roger Grosset 9th 12,800
10. Mike Henderson 23rd 7,600
There was, as expected some high drama and some heartbreak. Paul Deol was on both ends of that spectrum. He KO’d Pat Woelk with 4 tables left when his KK got there against Pat Woelks AA and Scott Brynens 77 resulting in a double KO. And then later would fall on a dramatic river club when the chips got all in the middle on a flop of KxXcXc with AK vs Roger Grosset’s KQcc. Ryan Watkins was the first to bust when he chopped a pot to get from 400 to 600 and then busted the next hand. Players did not fall as fast as anticipated early on however as the super shortstacks looked for their spots.
A heart congratulations to all of our prize winners and best of luck to you down at the World Series of Poker. We all have a small piece of you so do us proud. I will update the site with who is playing which events as soon as I get confirmations from all of the players. I can confirm that this will be the first time one of our winners plays the Seniors Event as Mike Henderson has already indicated that will be his choice. Also for those watching these guys with interest we have 62 fully paid members this year and we get one-third of any cash, meaning we all have 0.5376% of each player at the WSOP meaning for every $10k in cashes each league member gets about $50.
March 30, 2011 – League Final Table Draw
The draw has been completed and below you can find the Table Draw for the League Final. There is some interesting things to note including Table 2 having 108,000 chips in play with the next closest having just 77,600. The button will start in Seat 1, so Raja and Denise, two of our major shortstacks with 400 chips got lucky and get a full lap to find a hand.

February 1, 2011 – WSOP Full Schedule Released
Use the following two links to see the WSOP 2011 Schedule and the same schedule in Excel Form.
At first glance it looks like the best dates for the league will likely be the week between June 4th and June 12th. Both of those weekends have a $1000 NLH event and mid-week has 3 more $1500 Holdem events. Also for our league winner the Main Event will be starting July 7, 8, 9 or 10 depending on which start day they choose.
February 1, 2011 – Adrian Nelson, RIP
|
Dear Fellow Players, Once again I have to say goodbye to a good friend too soon. It is my unfortunate duty to let you all know that my very good friend and fellow Die Hard Poker Player Adrian Nelson passed away yesterday Jan 31, 2011 at the age of 38. He had been in the hospital first with pneumonia and then for problems the doctors could never quite figure out. He had been in the hospital since Dec 18 though he did make it home for two days over Christmas to be with his wife Heidi and young son, 1-year old Jack. He died in his hospital bed from what specifically I do not have details. Adrenal Hemorage was diagnosed last week however. Adrian you will be missed greatly. RIP. Heidi and Jack our thoughts are with you. It just isn't fair that the good ones get taken so early. I knew Adrian since high school. We worked together at Intense Software and Creo, and he was obviously instrumental in the Die Hard Poker League being one of the original members. Without him the league will never quite be the same. I am happy to say that even though we both had extremely busy lives we had a phenomenal week in Vegas together last summer, playing poker, drinking, etc and I will have nothing but good memories of you Adrian. You've touched so many in your lives and I have yet to meet someone that had a negative thing to say about you. From your times with the Scanadanavian Cultural Center, as the broadcaster of the Terminal City Rollergirls, work in the Movie industry, the DieHardPoker league and DieHardHockey league I dont know ANYONE that had anything but praise for you. You truly were one of the good guys. You will be missed, Darren |
December 28, 2010 – 2011 World Series of Poker Dates
Released
The dates have been posted for the 2011 World Series of Poker but the schedule has yet to be released. Look for the full schedule to be released in the next two weeks. Of note is the the Main Event is to again have 4 starting days and take place from July 7-19. The series itself runs from May 31-July 19 and there are two $1000 NLHs with Day 1A and Day 1B, the other 3 will have only one start day on the Sunday. There are 5 $1000 NLH events this year as opposed to 6 last year and there will be 10 $1500 events as opposed to 8 last year.
December 28, 2010 – Lance Murdoch Wins Event #5
Chopping the money 3 ways with Harry Aujla and
non-leaguer Darryl Scott
The halfway point was hit on December 10 and we had a 73 person turnout for what is typically our lowest turnout of the year. So pretty damn good. It was a solid battle all the way to the money. Clearly the talent level in the league has risen and it continues to show. Lance Murdoch made it to the Final 3 with Harry Aujla and Darryl Scott all deadlocked in chips. At that point they cut a deal for the money and left Harry and Lance to battle for the points. Lance came out on top. Both Lance and Harry had been on dry spells of late so the great finishes appeared to be a welcome relief. Harry in particular had been very prone to getting his Aces cracked late in tourneys including the $550 at River Rock and in Event 4 of our league. This time however halfway thru the tournament he got it in again with Aces 3-ways for his tournament life against two underpairs and for a change they held. That was his key point to battling to the end. Lance had a monster pot where he spiked two pair on the river to smite an overpair halfway thru the tournament which was his own key to victory.
There are now 36 of the 71 league members that have points and are thus qualified for the League Final which is as good a Segway as any to remind you all to make sure you are free for April 8 as there are no substitutes allowed for the League Final. We also have banked over $20,000 for the league final prizes at this point which means I can now guarantee a minimum of 1 Grand Prize and 6 Secondary Prizes and in reality it all but guarantees us 8 Secondary Prizes. So we should send 9 or possibly 10 people down to Vegas this year!
The in the point finishers for Event 5 were (1-13): Lance Murdoch ($770), Harry Aujla ($770), Darryl Scott ($780, non-league), Dave Sims ($320), Mike Menkes ($270), Nelson Lawlor ($220, non-league), Darryl Nicholson ($180), Keith Matsalla ($140, non-league), Blake Vails ($100), TJ Johnston, Andrew Krywaniuk, Dustin Jones, Raja Sabbagha
December 28, 2010 – Huge Congratulations to Brant
Taylor for Cashing in the $550 and $1100 BCPC Events
The BC Poker Championships returned to River Rock Casino November 18-27 and a few of our members played in the tourneys. Brant Taylor was monstrous in getting to the final two tables of both the $550 and $1100 NLH events with both fields in the 500 runner range. While ultimately a tad disappointing to be oh so close to the big money awaiting at the final table, Brant can hold his head very high with the results. Glad to see a Die-Harder doing well.
December 28, 2010 – Rod Smith makes it 2 Titles This
Year and Greg Herman finishes Second in Event #4
Event #4 on November 19 was much smoother starting as I made it up in plenty of time. We were once again in the Arizona room and we were slightly down in numbers with 75 players. But it was all about the same old people as Rod Smith took down his second event of the year making it 3 top 3 places in the first 4 events and Greg Herman had his third straight Final Table with two second places.
The in the point finishers for Event 4 were (1-10): Rod Smith ($1150), Greg Herman ($720), Howard Holt ($480), Mike Schubert ($360), Pat Woelk ($290), TJ Johnston ($230), Rob Holmberg ($180), Rob Sims ($140), Ryan McDonald ($100) and Ed Sue.
November 7, 2010 – Mike Leis wins Event #3
Event #3 started late thanks to me getting stuck in Seattle rush hour. My apologies for the delay and I made sure the poker chips are staying north of the border so this should not happen again. That being said we drew another great turnout with 81 players competing and ultimately Mike Leis outlasting Dave Sims for the win. We also saw 5 different players register their second final table already meaning we have 25 of our 71 league members already on the board in the points department.
Looking forward to Event 4 as we get to the meat of the schedule.
The in the point finishers for Event 3 were (1-10) : Mike Leis ($1200), Dave Sims ($750), Rod Smith ($550), Marie Hilts ($400), Magus Beales ($300), Dan Molatore ($250), Greg Herman ($200), Elton Ngan ($150), Jeff Hall ($100 non-league), Guy Bottin, Dave Slater (non-league), TJ Johnston
October 21, 2010 – Event #2 Sees Chris Herbert Win
Event #2 saw us move to the much more spacious West Room upstairs. It also saw an amazingly fast start for two players as Denise Henderson and Chris Hebert built massive stacks at the expense of their opponents in the first two hours of this event. Both would ride those stacks all the way to the Final Table. There were not as many massive setup hands this time around, but we did have another Mizrachi impression as for the second straight event we had a brother combo at the Final table. This time around it was Eric Herman, who would go out in 7th place joined by his brother Greg who finished runner-up to Chris Herbert. Chris had a decidedly better Event #2. In Event #1 he finished a dead-last 82nd, only to follow that up with a first place in Event #2. Talk about a change of fortunes. Another interesting point is that there was not a single player who returned to the Final Table meaning we now have 20 different players with points so far.
We now have 71 league members and with the move to the West Room we should be able to handle up to 100 players. I do still need spares emailing me ahead of time though as it makes it easier to process buy-ins. I am also happy to say we started the tournament at 7:04pm thanks to everyone showing up early to buy-in. Hope we can stay on top of it going forward.
The in the point finishers for Event 2 were (1-10) : Chris Hebert ($1000), Greg Herman ($1000), Dylan Ruocco ($550), Ken Douglas ($420), Matt Janzen ($320), Pat Woelk ($260), Eric Herman ($200), Sean Magee ($150, playing for Dan Molatore), Larry Williams ($100), Denise Henderson.
October 12, 2010 – Event #2 Coming this Friday
After Event #1's huge turnout, we are ready to kick it up a notch for Event #2.
We should be able to get cards in the air at least 15 minutes faster than last event. Also please note that anyone showing up after the initial 81 (9 tables of 9) will need to await bust-outs before entering the tournament. We will allow new players to replace bust-outs for the first 4 levels. We will take drop-in players in priority order. Any player not bought in 10 minutes prior to start of tournament (LEAGUE MEMBER OR OTHERWISE) will need to wait for player bust-outs to enter the tourney. Any league member showing up late will be at the top of priority ahead of all non-league members but will still need to wait. If you plan on being late, get a friend to buy you in so you have a seat.
We have 72 league members and 8 people currently on the drop-in list: (Sean Nguyen, Kai Picard, John Forsythe, Bob Lisle, Barry Strelioff, Jesse Williams, Barry Jasper, Mike Leis friend. If every league member shows up (unlikely) we have room for only one more drop-in, so please if you are a non-league member and you want to play or have a friend who wants to play, let me know ASAP so they can get a high priority number on the list. As an FYI we typically have 7-8 league members no-show per event, but I can’t guarantee anything.
Please do your best to be there at 6:30pm so we can get everyone signed up and seated. At 6:50pm I will fill up the remaining seats with any drop-ins on the list replacing any league members not yet there.
Please note that I am working with Janette at Coyote Creek to get an extra table or a bigger room to alleviate this problem in the future. No guarantees though.
September 24, 2010 – Wow! Rod Smith Wins Record
Turnout for Event #1
I knew we were going to have a solid turnout this year when we had 57 confirmed league members prior to showing up, but 71 league members and 82 total players absolutely blew me away. Great turnout! To put this in perspective we’ve only once cracked 62 in the past and that was 68. Wow! This likely means there will be at least 9 Vegas trips (1 ME seat and 8 others) up for grabs, which is absolutely incredible!
There were some absolutely crazy hands including THREE set-over-set bustouts in the first two hours all on the same table (Table 4). Unbelievable. Another hand saw at a 9-handed table: AA vs KK vs QQ vs JJ. Unreal! But there were some more mundane hands and some solid poker playing as well. The Rohrback brothers did their best Mizrachi impression, with both of them final tabling the event. In the end though it was Rod Smith who outlasted Magus Beales to win the event, 10,000 points and take home the $1250 first place prize.
Please note for all non-league members that you need to let me know via email if you are coming. We have 71 league members at this point and we are setup for sitting 81 players at once. Anyone after the first 81 will need to await bustouts. Also, anyone showing up after we start will need to wait to come in on level changes. We will accept late-arrivals for the first 3 levels (one hour). Late arrivals will start with a full stack.
The league standings page has been updated and the All Time leaders page will be updated later in the week.
The in the point finishers for Event 8 were (1-10) : Rod Smith ($1250), Magus Beales ($750), Rick Rohrback ($550), Dennis Bird ($420), Jeff Scott ($320), Ray Rohrback ($260), Marie Hilts ($200), Mike Schubert ($150), Ryan McDonald ($100), Ed Sue.
September 16, 2010 – Darren’s 2010 World Series of
Poker Main Event Recap
I realize I never posted anything about my WSOP ME cash so I figured since we are a day away from the next season, it’s a good time to reflect on the culmination of a successful WSOP for me. My finish was 622/7319 runners for $21,327. I signed a patch deal with pokerstars that resulted in an additional Pokerstars Carribean Adventure package worth over $15,000 ($10,300 buy-in, 9 night’s accommodation at Atlantis in Bahamas and $2000 cash). I was only allin 3 times the entire tournament. Once on Day 3 with KK when it got checked on river, Once on Day 4 with KK vs QQ of Rolf Slotboom and my final hand of AJo vs TT. I did put my chips all in a 4th time with KK reraising over-the-top of Rolf Slotboom’s 50,000 chip open shove but no one called me meaning I was not at risk as I would have had a little over 20,000 left if I got sucked out on.
I played Day 1A on Monday July 5th, flew home to Seattle Tuesday morning and worked tue-thu, flew back to Vegas Thursday night, played Day 2A on Friday, July 9, flew back to Bellingham on Saturday morning and went to a friend’s wedding in Burnaby, then flew back to Vegas the morning Monday July 12th to play Day 3. I arrived in Vegas at 11:10am and started playing at noon cutting it very tight. I played again on Tuesday in Day 4 which is when the bubble burst at about 9:30pm. I then busted about 11:10pm and the run was over. Below is a summary write up from Day 1A and Day 3 and then my twitter feed from the duration. Hope you find it interesting. It was my first Main Event and the first poker tourney above a $2700 buy-in for me.
Written 5:51pm,
Tuesday July 6, 2010 (After Day 1A)
I played Day 1A of the World Series of Poker Main Event on Monday. I fared well and made it through to Day 2A.
Darren's Day 1
Greg Raymer announced the shuffle up and deal and proceeded to bust himself out of tournament in first level.
I started Amazon Table 273: Shannon Shorr in 3 seat, Al Barbieri in 7 seat, me in 5 seat. Al angry man, was forever making nasty comments to dealers and players. Al fortunately busted well before dinner.
I win first 3 pots of tourney with 66, AQ and AJ.
Shorr and I had mutual respect and kept pots small. Example: him QQ vs my JJ on 88632 board, I lead out he just called, Check, check turn and I value bet river, he calls and has me beat,
We had a major agro player in Seat 9. I lost a big one to him when he fired 3 bullets on Qd8d5cQhJs board. I think my KdJd might have been good with the Jack river. But he fired enough to put me quite short if I was wrong. I folded and stayed at 21,500 which is my low point so far. Pot would have put me over 50,000 though if I wa good and under 8000 if I was wrong. A couple hands later on BB (150-300) with 3h4h and he's only raiser to 750. I call. Flop 964. I check call 900. Turn 5, I check call 1475. River Q and I check. He throws 5000 chip in and says I thought 2500 in broken english. I ask dealer to confirm and he confirms 2500. I say call and then player says it's 3500. I call floor. Bet stands at 2500 and player mucks rather than show. I rollover bottom pair and he looks pissed off that I called him so light.
Lost a big pot with AJ on SB vs Button raiser. I 3 bet preflop, he called. Flop AT6, I check, he bet, I call. Turn J completing spades, I check call. River I check he bets large and I pay off KQ.
Up and down from 30k->36k->22k-30.3k at dinner. Moved to Table 345 Seat 1 at dinner. Young Dutch guy with 90k and postion (3 seat) 4 bet me a lot. Also had John Shipley in 6 seat with chips. Entereed a lot fo pots shortly after dinner and gave them all up on flop or turn. Got down to 23k then won two straight pots with AQ on Ahigh board. Just checked called all the way to the river. One was against Dutch kid. Got up to 34k again and started feeling more comfortable with the table.
Busted the 7 seat with AKhh. I UTG raised to 1050 (200-400), flatted by Italian in 4 seat, 7 seat shoves for about 6700 on top. I flat (mistake, I should have iso-shoved), Italian lets it go and board comes 88h6h2h4h. I win with flush. Another aggro Euro, a Dane replaces this guy and he opens cutoff on my BB 3 straight times. I have QJ the third time and call. Flop QJ4, I check call flop and turn and bet river. He tank calls. Nice pot puts me over 40,000.
Made friends with 2 seat, Damian, and it paid off. In mid-position I opened with JJ and he flatted behind me with KK. Flop came A high and we checked it to turn where he fired and I folded. NExt lap I open on button with to 875 QQ and he 3 bets SB to 2500. I call. Flop KTx and he fires 4100 in. I fold and again he has Kings. Luckily he didn't slowplay that dry board. It pays to make friends with those on your left. Next lap I open on button again and this time they fold. I flash Aces and take blind and antes :)
Made it through to Day 2A (noon Friday start) with 44,900 chips which is just above the average of 44,000 and my high point was at 48,000, so ended very close to my highwater point. We have 762 of 1125 players remaining. Day 1A combines with survivors of Day 1C so the average will change somewhat based on what percentage of players bust out on that day.
I will be on Pavilion Table 28, Seat 2 and these are the players assigned to my table so far (the rest will come from Day 1C). My table doesn't have any monster stacks but Mark Gregorich has $1.2million in tourney earnings so he'll be tough. Kuzmicki is a young tough kid and Aloush has no cardplayer profile, so maybe a soft spot??
Darren Kennedy 44,900 PAVILION / 28 / 2
Victor Aloush 40,550 PAVILION / 28 / 4
Justin Kuzmicki 23,150 PAVILION / 28 / 6
Mark Gregorich 55,625 PAVILION / 28 / 8
Overall I was very happy with my play. I probably could have squeezed some more value out of a few of my big hands, but I also could have paid off my opponents a lot more on some second best hands. So I think it evened out. My confidence is quite high going into Day 2. I signed on with Pokerstars so I am patched up during play and can take advantage of some nice bonuses like a $15,000 PCA tournament package if we cash, 50,000 free FPPs on our stars account, plus hat, jacket, t-shirt, backpack, headphones etc. Figured it was worth it vs the off chance of getting on a feature table and getting paid cash to wear advertisement.
Of 766 players returning I am 313th with 44,900 and average bang on 44,000. A couple other Seattlites I saw: Anthony Wise from 5/10 Monday night Snoqualmie is in 19th place with 110,975, and Zac Humphrey is in 561st with 24675.
As usual best way to follow my progress is via twitter at DarrenDieHard, which is updated 8-10 times a day during play.

11:25am, July 11, 2010 (After Day 2A)
Mini-update.
I
made it thru Day 2. Shortish-stacked with 32,500 (32
BB's) at 500-1000-100. Average is 85,000 ish
Going
back tomorrow at noon. Around 2600 of 7319 starters still remain and they are
paying 747 places. Looking forward to a nice double up tomorrow ;)
The
day started out great with me running my 44,900 up slowly to 60,000 before losing
a decent chunk of my chips with AT to QJ on a T98 board. The QJ player had been
playing literally every second hand, so it was tough to give him credit. I
dropped 16,000 chips there. After that there were two spots where I had second
best and eventually was looking at only 19000 chips before finding an almost
double with K9 vs A7 on a min raised 5 way bot from
the BB and an A92 flop. Checked around, turn 8. I called SB bet of 3600 and
then when K hit river and it was checked to me I led out for half remaining
chips (6500) and was called.
It
was a really tough day, basically being card dead the entire day. I found AK
twice, TT once (against AA ugh) and no other premium starting cards. Surviving
was a victory given my cards and mister aggression on my left. Hopefully I can
find a couple of hands tomorrow and make a run at it. It is expected the money
bubble won’t burst to near the end of Day 4, so I have a TONNE of work to do.
Wish
me luck,
DK

11:52pm, July 12, 2010 (After Day 3)
Another quick recap for Day 3. Started 32,500 which was just 32 BBs and less than half average of 85k, made it up to 144,800 (60BBs) going into Day 4. Ended on my high point. Still below average (~$180,000 ave) but in much better shape than start of day. About 1200 players returning and magic number is 747 when the bubble bursts. Hoping to catch up to the average quickly tomorrow.
Bit more detail now that I am on my laptop.
Tired so major short recap of big hands.
Folded mostly for first 3 hours, stealing blinds to keep even.
Got a little value on AKs with flop of AK3, but not a big pot, although it got me over 40k for first time today. Bled back down to 30k
KQd on Jd9d22d7d board got me from 30k to 50k. About 3 hands later I found KK and got full value betting and being called on every street before moving in for last 19,500 on river and getting called for full double. Board was T7297. This hand was first time I was all in the entire tournament (~21 hours of play).
From there a few nice pots with AQ hitting top 2 for a 60k pot against AJ on A26QK board. He didn't call my river bet though.
Found Aces on second last hand of the night and 4 bet took down a nice 13k uncontested pot and ended on my high-water point with 144,800.
Blinds at 1200-2400-300 to start day tomorrow.
Expect bubble to burst late in the day and fully expect to make the money. Its go time!
Goodnight from Vegas and the fucking Flamingo
